Psychodynamic approach

This type of counseling aims to explore and understand the unconscious processes and dynamics underlying an individual’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It’s based on the belief that those unresolved conflicts and experiences of the past can impact a person’s current psychological state.

In this approach, counsellors use techniques such as dream analysis, free association, and interpretation to help individuals better understand their unconscious feelings and thoughts. Sessions are also more focused on the client’s interpersonal relationships and how unconscious patterns can influence them.

Humanistic approach

This approach in counselling emphasized three essential aspects.

  • Individual’s inherent worth
  • Potential for growth
  • Ability to make positive changes in their lives

As you can see, it’s more of self-actualization because the humanistic approach believes that we have a natural inclination towards self-improvement. But how do counsellors use this approach? 

In this approach, the counselor takes an empathetic and non-directive approach. This will allow the individual to lead the conversation while the counsellor is there, ready to provide support and guidance as needed. 

Additionally, the counsellor may use techniques such as active listening, reflection, and clarification to help the client better understand their emotions and beliefs. The humanistic approach also emphasizes the importance of the therapeutic relationship, as a strong and positive connection between therapist and client can facilitate healing and growth.

Behavioral approach

Based on its name, this approach focuses on changing negative behaviors and thought patterns that may contribute to an individual’s mental health issues. This approach believes that behaviors are learned responses to environmental stimuli and that we can learn to replace negative behaviors with more positive ones through conditioning and reinforcement.

Counsellor who employs this approach works collaboratively with the client to determine negative behaviors and thought patterns and then develop strategies to change them. These strategies may include exposure therapy, where the client is gradually exposed to feared stimuli in a safe and controlled environment, and cognitive restructuring.

Cognitive approach

When it comes to the cognitive approach, it’s the type of counselling that concentrates on how an individual’s thoughts and beliefs affect their behavior and emotions. This approach wants to solve mental health concerns arising from negative or irrational thoughts that can lead to negative feelings and behaviors.

Counsellors who employ this approach work with individuals o identify and challenge negative or distorted thoughts and beliefs. This can involve recognizing and replacing negative self-talk, challenging unrealistic or unhelpful beliefs, and teaching clients to reframe situations more positively or adaptively.

As you can see, there are different approaches that a mental health counsellor can use to help you manage mental health concerns. However, you need to know that not all these can be employed all at once. 

For your counsellor to know which approach is right for you, they need to assess you first. They’ll ask about your problems, issues, and goals and then find ways how they can help you. Counsellors are professionals, and they can guarantee you that they’ll only use the suitable approach to help you.
